Diets and autophagy part 1

In this post I would like to introduce you to the effect of the diets we follow at Alhambra in the context of intracellular nutrition. In this article, I will introduce you to the ketogenic diet and Dr Dabrowski's fasting, however, we have four diets that have something to do with this process at the hotel. This gives you the chance to find the diet that best suits you and carries health benefits.

The ketogenic diet, popularly known as the keto diet, has become a topic of intense research and interest among healthy lifestyle advocates. A fascinating aspect of this diet lies in its potential impact on autophagy, a biological process crucial to cellular regeneration.

Low carbohydrate intake and autophagy

Central to the keto diet is a reduction in carbohydrate intake, which leads to a drop in blood glucose levels. This decrease stimulates autophagy, a process in which cells begin to seek alternative sources of energy, contributing to repair processes.

Effects on insulin and glucose regulation

The keto diet also affects levels of insulin, the hormone that regulates glucose. The reduction in insulin is associated with the activation of autophagy, which promotes the elimination of damaged cells and the cleansing of the body.

Fats, ketone bodies and autophagy

The switch to fat burning, characteristic of the keto diet, generates ketone bodies. These substances can affect autophagy, putting cells into a state that promotes regenerative and reparative processes.

Long-term intermittent fasting to support autophagy

Long-term intermittent fasting, practised by some proponents of the keto diet, further accelerates autophagy processes, aiding the body's regeneration.

Dr Dabrowska's diet, also known as the fruit and vegetable diet, is not only becoming a popular choice in the world of healthy eating, but also harbours fascinating links to the process of autophagy. Focusing on the concept of auto-intoxication, or the body's self-poisoning of toxins, this diet follows the path of stimulating the body's self-cleansing processes, which can have beneficial effects on cellular health.

Renewal of the body at the cellular level

Dr Dabrowski's diet places a strong emphasis on detoxifying the body by eating mainly vegetables and fruit in raw form. This approach is designed to support natural cleansing processes and, from an autophagy perspective, the elimination of toxins from the body can tighten the link to improved cellular recycling processes.

The nutritional power of fruits and vegetables

Eating cleansing foods, rich in fibre, enzymes, vitamins and minerals, plays an important role in Dr Dabrowski's diet. These nutrients not only support overall cellular health, but can also benefit autophagy processes.

Intermittent fasting and the Dr Dabrowska Diet

Some people combine intermittent fasting with the Dr Dabrowska Diet, which have the potential to influence the activation of autophagy. Long-term fasting, especially when combined with a vegetable and fruit diet, can stimulate autoregulation and cell renewal processes, with health benefits.

The antioxidant power of fruits and vegetables

Constituents in fruit and vegetables, such as flavonoids, polyphenols and other plant compounds, are not only tasty additions to the diet, but also powerful antioxidant substances. Their role in neutralising free radicals can support cells' ability to self-regulate, repair and activate autophagy.

In the next post, we will present two other diets with which we are also able to activate this miraculous process that is autophagy.

~Sandra Brudnik - dietician of the Alhambra Hotel

I have been passionate about dietetics and cooking for many years and am constantly developing in this direction. I have completed a degree in clinical dietetics and have attended and continue to attend many training courses. Since 2020, I have been acting as a dietitian at the Alhambra Hotel and I work with the diets we prepare for you. A few years ago I was sceptical about Dr Dabrowski's diet, but I have found out first-hand what it does and I help our guests during Dr Dabrowski's Fasting.
