KETOGENIC DIET
In short, "KETO" - is a way of eating that is low in carbohydrates and high in fats.
The standard source of energy is glucose. This comes from carbohydrates found in products such as potatoes, bread, pasta and sweets. These products are very easily converted by the body into energy.
By lowering our carbohydrate intake, we burn fat for energy. The fat we use as an energy source comes from fat stored in our bodies (weight loss) or from fat consumed.
By using fat as fuel we produce ketones, a by-product of fat breakdown, putting the body into a ‘state of ketosis’.
APPLICATIONS:
- obesity treatment,
- in type 2 diabetes,
- insulin resistance,
- reduction of triglyceride levels.
Most people opt for this diet because you can eat fatty foods such as bacon, pork knuckle etc. However, it is important to remember that these products contain saturated fatty acids, which can cause cardiovascular, metabolic and cancerous diseases. So remember to include more vegetable fats in your diet.
